Get moving now! You won’t regret it.

You know, I recently read an interesting fitness study off NBCNEWS.com. Dr. Venkatesh Murthy of the University of Michigan, did a study over several years where he monitored subjects while they completed intense treadmill tests, most going all-out for 10 minute intervals. The article said the study found that “People who are in good shape as young adults—mostly in their 20s—are much less likely to die in middle age.” Even if the young adult wasn’t necessarily fit or thin, having exercise practices in place greatly improved their health for later years. (I’ll link to the article so you can read the nitty-gritty.)

This wasn’t really a whole new concept for me. I mean, I remember my gym teacher in high school saying it’s easier to make healthy habits when you’re young. And the Biggest Loser, really hit that message into over-drive. But I never really considered that my habits now could affect my lifespan. What’s eating an entire pizza and downing a bottle of root beer when you’re in your early 20s? Or staying inside playing video games instead of going out into the summer’s heat? It’s not like it’s really going to do anything to my health, right?

But, our life is all connected—it doesn’t know it’s chunked into decade milestones. There’s no refresh button that starts your health back at zero on your birthday.

It’s a sobering thought. It makes me want to get out there and be active. I want to enjoy a long, happy life. The outcome of living through a couple minutes of discomfort and activity is far worth it.
